Mulching is an important part of gardening; it helps to keep weeds down, conserve moisture and can add nutrients to the soil as the mulch breaks down. There are several types of mulches available, so it’s important to choose the right one for your landscaping needs.
Organic mulches such as bark or wood chips break down over time and need to be replaced regularly. They’re good for adding nutrients to the soil. Inorganic mulches such as gravel or stones don’t break down and last longer, making them a suitable choice for areas where you don’t require extra nutrients for the soil.
At Highfields Garden Centre in Toowoomba, we’ll help you to select the right mulch for your annuals, ornamentals and fruit trees. Head on over or call (07) 4630 8548.
We have a selection of organic mulches available, including:
Typically, organic mulch will need to be applied at least once a year, in spring or autumn, by hand or with a garden spreader. Apply a layer of mulch that’s around five to ten centimetres deep; but be careful not to pile the mulch up against the stems of plants as this can cause them to rot.
